“Gate: 1” reflects on the ancestral history from World War II of my birthplace of Okinawa, Japan while pointing to the U.S. military presence that still exists on the island. Over 1000 individually patterned beaded strands were created via group beading sessions with the community in and around Franconia Sculpture Park in Minnesota, the site of this work, and students at the University of Minnesota.
